An Open Letter to PicknPay
21 January 2013
PicknPay
Head Office
Customer care: xxxxxx@pnp.co.za
Marketing: xxxxxx@pnp.co.za
To Whom It May Concern,
It is with some incredulity that I noted a headline
on the front page of the PicknPay “Goodness News” Summer 2012 stating “Keep
Them Safe ... PnP supports the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), which is
spearheading several rhino projects”.
As an anti Rhino-poaching activist I find this to
be in rather bad taste and I certainly hope that you are not merely using your
“we-love-the-rhinos” attitude as a marketing ploy.
How can you, in all honesty, profess to be
supporting the plight of our Rhino when each and every item of clothing and
shoes in your (many) clothing franchises and your hypermarkets are made in
China? China, along with Vietnam, is currently
one of the biggest importers of Rhino Horn – the very reason why our Rhino are
being murdered at such an alarming rate.
Is it possible for a large company such as yours to
purport to value the lives of our Rhino whilst at the same time apparently
helping to sustain the economy of a country whose citizens hold the lives of
these endangered creatures in such poor regard? Your contemporaries at least
give customers some choice by buying and offering items from other countries.
As for me, I find it all rather distasteful and
cannot bring myself to patronise PicknPay or any of its stores. Unless, of course, PicknPay makes the
decision to place themselves fully in the Rhinos’ “corner” and fight for our
Rhino
Yours sincerely,
Lynda Madden

NB: I will
be posting this as an open letter on Facebook and copying it to various
anti-Rhino poaching organisations.
